A New Minion in a Small Package
« on: July 11, 2017, 05:53:09 PM »
The green twi'lek bounty hunter waited in the room where the droid guards had left him with cages and crates, large and small, full of strange animals. He hoped this haul would be enough for a good payment, but tried not to get his hopes too high. Despite the raid on that little illegal exotic pet shop being a complete success, there was no guarantee that even half of what he had here would be dangerous/poisonous enough for Ice's liking. Still, the secretive man had asked for unusual creatures. He just hoped that these were weird enough to satisfy...

He held up one cage in particular, examining the grey fluffy cat-sized creature within. A “long-eared chameleon tooka”, her cage label had read. He snorted at that. She was certainly something, but he doubted she was a tooka. No tooka he had ever heard of could change its fur color that way. She didn't sound like a tooka either, at least not in her sleep.

"Hey," he said softly to the creature, though his voice was rough and gravelly "don't you die on me now. I didn't nurse you back to health just for kicks."

The creature only blinked at him, her rainbow eyes changing color to match his purple ones.

So she was at least aware now. Good. She still looked too thin for his liking, and her fur needed a good brushing, but maybe he could still get half price for her at least. The poor thing had been half dead from fever when he had picked her up along with the others, but he supposed if she hadn't been feverish, he might well have left her to die. Her fur color seemed to change with her mood, and--if the shop keeper was to be believed--she could change it at will too. Her fur had changed constantly while she was sick, as had her eye color.

He reached a finger between the bars, stroking her soft fur. She didn't react, only continuing to stare at him. He stopped petting her, and put the crate down, moving to check on the other animals in his, hopefully temporary, care...

As usual, Ice could be found in his lab working on one of his disturbing science projects when he was pinged about someone answering a bounty he had placed ages ago.  An eyebrow raised when he realized what he was being interrupted for.

Securing his work station, he cleaned up on his way to his office. Meanwhile, he gave clearance to security to show the Bounty Hunter in alongside his ...items for sale.  It wouldn't take too long before the man was brought in before Ice.

"I do trust you're not wasting my time with animals that qualify for nothing more than being a pet....right?" He had a slightly tired look to his face while he was attempting to deal with the twilek.  "After all, I'm not trying to build a zoo....as I mentioned last time we spoke."

The twi'lek shrugged, "Look, just because I used to be a veterinarian doesn't mean I know everything about animals. Most of these. I've never seen before, or have seen but can't find much info about. I know at least some of these are potentially venomous and/or poisonous," he gestured to several reptiles and amphibians, "But I wasn't about to test that on myself. What I do remember is you asking for weird critters. So I got you weird critters. You don't like them, sell them to an actual zoo. I just want to get paid." Looking through the crates, Ice would notice that most of the animals had lots of sharp teeth, sharp claws, and/or unusual colors. And one fuzzy thing that looked like a cross between a rabbit and a cat.

The fuzzy creature's fur was stormy grey, but as Ice watched, the creature's fur shifted to match the color of the crate walls and floor, and it's eyes closed, as if it was trying to hide from him.

Ice began to walk the selection of beast as the Twilek made his excuses. He was about to low-ball the man fairly bad when he caught sight of one little critter than changed it's fur color to blend in with the crate it was in. Hmm...now that's intriguing, the scientist in him thought to himself.

Still, he feigned an almost uninterested sigh as he turned away so as not to give any creature an inordinate amount of attention. "So wait....you want me to purchase a bunch of animals I have no use for....so you don't have to worry about finding buyers for them?  You do realize I'll be forced you give you a lower price to take all that responsibility off your hands and deal with this myself, right?"

Ice glanced at the Bounty Hunter with a sort of irritated smirk.  "So here's what I'll do.  I have a contact in a Mandalorian zoo that I might be able to beg, plead, or cajole to take most of these...but I can only offer you half of retail value on these.  After all, you know government run zoos don't have much money for new animal acquisitions. Deal?"

The twi'lek frowned, but sighed irritably. "Fine, deal. I need the credits, just be careful alright. I'm pretty sure some of these are endangered. I... er, 'liberated' them from a black market exotics shop during my last hunt."

He handed Ice a datapad, "Here's everything I was able to find out about them. Basic stuff, dietary needs, behavioral patterns, sleep schedules, that sort of thing. Oh, and whatever you do, don't startle the big spiky one, or make it think you're food. That one I know for a fact is venomous. Blood destroyer, and it shoots those quills." He shuddered, glad to be rid of the thing.

Looking over at the furry creature again, he added as his old vet training kicked in, "Make sure you give that one double rations and plenty of rest and fluids. She's only just recovered from a bad infection and is still under weight. You'll know she's feeling better when she turns white. Smart too, if all the locks on her cage were anything to go by. Oh, and if she turns black, it means she's about to bite you. Those incisors cut right to the bone."

Ice was somewhat surprised the negotiation had gone so easily in his favor. Still, he wasn't going to complain about that. The comment about how these creatures came to him however, better explained the reason for the ease of the transaction.

Ice already had a somewhat disturbing idea for a hybrid between this poisonous, quill throwing creature and this color changing fluffy....thing that seemed to have a pension for hiding.  Only time would tell if it would yield anything fruitful.

When the Twilek explained the most interesting specimen he had also had the apparent ability to get through locked doors, that instantly moved it up to the top of the list of animals to study.  Raising an eyebrow, he cast a glance at the cowering animal. "That smart is she? Thanks for the warning. And the rest of the information." The scientist added while looking back to the Twilek.

Offering a hand shake, he continued. "I'll have your credits wired directly. A pleasure doing business with you.  My guards will escort you back to your ship. Safe travels." When the bounty hunter had taken his leave, Ice wondered back over to the smart creatures cage.

"Tell me my little friend.  What sort of animal has the intelligence to pick locks...?" The comment was moreso for himself as he obviously wasn't expecting to actually get a response.  "Are you intelligent enough to learn other things, I wonder?"

The twi'lek nodded, shaking Ice's hand, but grumbled something under his breath that sounded like, "...should've charged you a vet care bill...". He started out the door, then stopped as if remembering something, and handed Ice another datapad. "Medication requirements," he said, "in case any of them get sick again. Some of these were a right pain to nurse back to health. Try not to undo all my hard work in one day, huh?" Smirking at his half joke, he left, waving goodbye as the guards escorted him out.

As Ice spoke to the fluffy creature, her eyes opened, and her fur returned to that stormy grey color, apparently indicating that she wasn't yet back to full health. As he continued to watch, her eyes shifted from their rainbow colors to match the color of his eyes, and she stared at him.

And then something strange happened. It was as if the look slipped, as if a mask were being pulled back. For just a moment, she was not looking through him as a beast would, but at him. Of course, this in itself was not too unusual, as it was something semi-sentients were known to do, or even some Force-sensitive animals. But there was something else as well... There was sadness and longing in her gaze. Then she started, then blinked, looking away from him, and the moment was passed. When she glanced back at him, her eyes were once more those of a simple animal's...

Ice simply nodded to the final comment from his supplier. As if he'd let his newly purchased assets just die from lack of care. How wasteful. If they were going to die, it would be from the worthy goal of trying to advance science. Not starvation or sickness.

The reaction he got from the creature in response to his questions was most interesting. He couldn't help but feel like there was something there he was missing.  Might have to have Malcom invade.....eh....kindly peak into it's mind to see what's what, he thought to himself.

Pulling up his datapad, he messaged his assistants to come in and take the animals away from his office before it smelled like a pet store. When they arrived, he gave special instructions for them to take extra care to ensure the color shifting one was well taken care of...and secure.

Glancing over to her specifically, he said again, moreso to himself. "Good night. Sleep well. Tomorrow we start the hard stuff."

Once settled for the night and sure she was alone, Nadisut cradled her face in her hands, berating herself for letting her mind wonder and her control slip. What had he seen? Did he guess anything? She groaned, wondering once again if it would be better just to give up this charade of being a dumb animal. How much longer could she go on like this? She longed for someone, anyone at this point, to talk to as a normal intelligent being again, even with her limited grasp on this alien language they all seemed to share. But once again, she reminded herself that she couldn't risk it. What would they do if they knew how smart she truly was, given how they treated simpler creatures? So far in her journey, only the green one with the headtails had shown her genuine kindness.  She wondered why he had given her away to this new one... Had she been part of some sort of trade?

Ah... this new one, he seemed more like the shopkeeper. Haughty and aloof, but at least he seemed better prepared to care for her and these other poor creatures. She had noticed an oddity in his scent as well, when compared to others of his kind. There was an underlying smell, not quite entirely masked.

But she shrugged it off, and set to work exploring her new environment. The assistants had moved her to a larger cage, fitted with a water bottle, food dispenser, and litter box. The door was fastened shut with several locks, and the slot for food was too small for her to squeeze through. The water bottle was firmly secured to the outside of the cage with clamps, with its drip feeder inserted between the bars. Even if she could unattach it, she could not think of any use for it. There was nothing useful in the litter box either, only tiny clay pebbles.

She had nothing to pick the locks with, yet, and no clear escape route. Sighing to herself, she decided she might as well work on regaining her strength for now, and started eating the unappealing vegetable pellets they considered food. Her hunger sated, she began grooming her fur straight, missing the feel of a good brush through the soft coat.

She shook her head again, more forcefully, willing herself not to think about her home and family, the lush green world, and her parents and siblings... How long had she been gone? It felt like ages. They must surly think her dead by now... But no. She couldn't let herself think that way. She could not give in to despair. She would get back to them someday... Somehow...

Her thoughts were interrupted by a flea, and she scratched at it irritably with a hind foot, careful to avoid reopening the scars along her shoulders and the back of her neck. That stupid shopkeeper... Putting those male creatures in with her... What had he called them? Tooka? What had he been thinking?! She knew of course, somewhere in the back of her mind, she knew perfectly well what the intent had been, but forced herself not to think about it, shuddering in revulsion.

She had fought them off, of course, but that last one had been more aggressive, and had ignored her warnings. She had needed to maim the poor brute before it took the hint. And then, of course, the shopkeeper hadn't bothered to clean her wounds, and being unable to reach them herself, infection had soon set in. She could remember only patches after that for a long while, the rest being a blur of half waking and fever dreams. But she did remember that green headtailed alien...

Pushing those thoughts aside, she curled up in the corner furthest from the cage door, and tried to rest. Sleep was swift in coming, and this time it was dreamless.

Unknown to her, the man that had purchased her was watching her from his office via a security camera feed.  There was something odd about this one.  Something out of place about how she carried out different actions.  Still, he couldn't put a finger on what it was that was nagging at the back of his mind.  Turning the holofeed off, he went to bed for the evening.

Ice sent a message to his brother the next morning.  After a longer than expected conversation, he managed to coerce Malcom to break away from Sha'do for a few hours to handle family business matters.  It wasn't a totally selfish request.  Ice did hope the break might do his brother some good.  Moving to where the newest acquisitions were being held, Ice marked each specimen that he found interesting enough to warrant further research.

He didn't say much.  Not till he got to the color shifter's cage.  "And good morning to you.  How is our little escape artist, hmm?  Sleep well?"  Ice asked absentmindedly while checking the cage and locks for any tampering.  Upon not seeing anything out of the ordinary, he began to wonder if the bounty hunter had been a tad over the top with his description of her abilities.  Course, then again, Ice tended to have everything more secure than your average person.

He then began to mark her cage for transport to the labs for scanning...

Nadisut was awake as Ice came and inspected the cages. She watched him carefully as he began labeling them, and crept closer, slowly, trying not to be noticed. Her eye color changed to match his again, but she watched his hands most of all, waiting for him to set down his pen, or put it too close to the cage. Maybe if she could grab it, it might come in useful...

She came right up to the bars as he checked over the locks on her door. Doing her best to look cute, she changed her fur color to her normal, healthy frost white. She meowed at him, purring and swishing her tail, as she had heard and seen feral tooka do from the window of the pet shop. She chased her tail, than rolled onto her back, trying not to wince in pain as the floor bars rubbed the scar tissue. She waved her hands and feet in the air, purring louder and inviting the man to pet her extra soft belly fur.

This was so humiliating... But she focused on maintaining her white color, determined not to let any mood change show through her fur.

Rolling towards the cage door, she reached out her hands, trying to bat at him playfully with one, while reaching for his pen with the other. Just a little closer...

Her attempts at looking cute to draw him in were wasted on Ice.  Being in scientist mode, he had a very analytical outlook on her current actions. Quite frankly, her actions were having the opposite affect of what she seemed to desire.  The bounty hunter's warning about higher intelligence alongside sharp incisors and an agressive attitude left Ice wary of a trap.

The fact that she changed her eye color to match his every time he drew near was curious, however.  He wondered if it wasn't as part of some instinctive  behavior to mystify and lure pretty in.  He shook his head of these thoughts.  That didn't make any sense. The vast majority of animals were color blind. And she had the look of an herbivore...not a carnivore.

No. Generally speaking, the only creatures that had the cone cells in the eyes capable of seeing all colors of the spectrum were....sentient... Which would also explain the odd behavior of last night.  But that couldn't be right, could it?  Sentients normally came in a much larger bipedal form... He gave a small, quick laugh to himself.

"Normally" creatures of any type couldn't shape shift either.  Lowering his gaze to her, but being careful to stay out of reach, Ice looked around to make sure he was alone.  Satisfied, he turned back to her with a smile and tilted his head curiously.  "I feel like you are holding out on me. What have I not been told about you...?" Ice held his steely gaze in silence after his question to see if it would invite any other peculiar behavior.

Seeing that her attempt at cuteness was having no effect, she gratefully stopped the performance. Her fur instantly shifted back to the unhealthy grey color, and her long ears drooped tiredly. Splotches of orange and blue color shone in her fur amid the grey as frustration at having failed, and relief at having to stop such foolish behavior, warred within her. There were even flecks of pink color, as her embarrassment finally showed through.

She rolled to her feet again, wincing at her sore shoulders, and met his steely gaze. Their body language was similar enough that she could tell he was curious, and she recognized his words as he asked his question.

There is much about me you don't know... was what she wanted to say. But she kept silent, sitting down and staring into his eyes. She titled her own head, perking her ears questioningly. She too, was curious, and her fur shifted again, revealing streaks of green through the grey as the other three colors vanished. She wasn't bothering to control her mood fur colors anymore, and so her emotions showed freely, as they had last night when she had thought she was alone and unwatched.

But in her case, her curiosity was about what this man had planned for her. She held his gaze for several more seconds, then stood up and shook herself. Moving over to the bars again, she openly reached for the pen he had, to see what reaction that would cause. Then she went to the door bars and shook them, gnawing on them both for effect and because--quite honestly--she was overdue for a good gnawing on something hard to wear her teeth down. The shopkeeper had not bothered giving her a hard chew toy, and the bounty hunter, while kind, seemed to have forgotten to put one in her carrying crate for her. She made sure to show Ice just how long her incisor teeth were getting, to see if he got the hint. After chewing on the door for several seconds, she tried chewing on a lock. Then, getting an idea, she grabbed the nearest lock and tried to pick it with her overly long teeth. It hurt twisting her neck at that angle, and she was partly worried about breaking a tooth, but than again, if they got too long, they would lock together, leaving her unable to open and close her mouth, and thus unable to eat. So at this point a broken tooth was not too worrying. Mostly, she wanted to see how Ice would react to this new display...

Ice raised an eyebrow at her display.  "Freedom is earned, little one.  I'm afraid I don't know enough about you to give you a chance like that so soon."  He said as he pulled away and finished his notes for her.  "I will offer you some advice, don't chew on that lock...you'll chip a tooth.  That iron is much stronger than anything that makes up your body composition, I assure you."

Placing the notes on her information pad nearby, he let out a long sigh as he gazed over the different animals once more.  "Well.  I guess I'll just see you in the labs.  There are many tests I'll need to run on you to figure out how you work.  After all, I know you aren't a Tooka.  But past that, you are an interesting mystery.  Take care."  Ice said nonchalantly as she he walked away.

If she did nothing at this point, a couple scientists would come in shortly after and haul her away to be scanned....

Obediently, she stopped trying to pick the lock, listening carefully as he spoke. She knew a little about metals, for they were used in her people's farming and harvesting tools to cultivate silkweed for textiles. But she was no blacksmith. Were his people metalworkers?

More importantly, what were these tests he was talking about? Pulling away from the bars, she settled down to wait for whatever would happen next.
