It had only been twenty minutes since Xale and another squire had rode into the hill top fortress, the rain having gone from pouring to only a light drizzle. Eighty of the forts two hundred men had been assembled in the main courtyard, twenty crossbow men, thirty men at arms, and ten knights. Among the knights called up was Cyrus Alvori. Word of the misfortune befalling the raiding party sent to suprise attack Baelor had already spread through out the ranks. Though what exactly happened wasn't clear, it was obvious things had gone horribly wrong. The murmer of voices talking about what was going on was quickly quieted as the thick wooden doors to the keep opened, the Baron of the fort Gerath walking out, with Xale beside him and another squire with them as well. The Baron was in full plate armor, and he looked at the gahtered men, clearning his throat.

Image of the Keep
"We have no time to waste so i shall make this short. As many of you have likely already heard, the raiding party of two hundred men sent into Baelor lands was suprised attacked, and is now defending itself from a greater force on top of a hill. They have taken losses and are out numbered by atleast two to one, if not worse. Your jobs are to go in and break the Baelor encirclement. After you make a hole, keep it open for our raiding party to retreat through. After they get out, guard their rear while returning to the fort. You will all be lead by this lad here, Xale Xernas" He said, slapping Xale on the back and pushing the young man forward. Xale was a youthful looking man, with sharp grey eyes. His blonde hair was messy, and for armor he wore what appeared to be thick, padded leather, with a heater sheild and a bastard sword at his back, and a long yellow scarf around his neck. The sheilds only decoration was a painting of the Kingdom of Xanatas's emblem. "He will show you the path and the best place to attack. After that, do your best to get back here safetly, and move as the situation demands it. I will be preparing the defences here for a Baelor counter attack. That is all." He said, patting Xale on the shoulder and murmuring something to him, before going off to the barracks to speak to the other remaining men. Xale and his companion both got on their Reiterei's, Xale looking over the group of eighty men.

Image of the Reiterei's

"Let us not waste time lest the rain begin again. Knights in the front, then crossbow men, and men at arms taking up the rear." He said in a suprisingly loud, clear, and deep voice. While it did not have the commanding presence one would expect of seasoned commanders, it had that feeling to it. Though perhaps that was no suprise, given he was the son of a Red Knight commander. As soon as the formation was settled, Xale and his companion lead the group out of the keep at a quick pace, heading to the battle.

Cyrus jogged in time with the rest of the army. Standing taller than most other Falorians, he stood almost a full head above the rest. Tower shield on his off-hand and a trident in his right, he was a menacing sight by even Falorian standards. Sporting a lighter armor called field plate, it was more of a carapace type armor that provided enough protection and restricted the least amount of movement.

The emerald eyes squinted as the rain drizzled down his face, the smell of wet metal covered the battalion. Being near the front of the pack, he could see their leader Xale Xernas mounted and ready ahead of the group. He knew nothing of this young knight, although, Cyrus himself was young for a knight. With the mission at hand, none spoke as they moved to save their brethren. Hopefully they'd arrive in time to rescue as many soldiers as possible and take some Baeloran scum while they were at it.

As they exited the fort and marched down the hill, Xale turned his head and looked back over the marching line. As expected, they were marching in perfect drilled formation. He was suprised by the sight of the notably tall Falorian Cyrus Alvori , with a trident and a tower sheild and in plate armor as well. His look only lingered for a moment, mentally shrugging after the suprise. Content however that all was well, he returned his focus to the road.

http://img01.deviantart.net/8c0e/i/2012/083/5/4/path_in_foggy_woods_by_tizjezzme-d4trmjf.jpg

When they entered the woods, it was quite the deary, foggy place as before. A person was was lucky to see one hundred feet in front of themself clearly with the combination of tree's, brush and fog. The only sounds were their boots and mounts moving through the muddy ground at a quick pace, and the occasional eery breeze that seemed to echo endlessly. For twenty minutes they kept up a quick pace, before the sounds of battle could be just faintly heard through the fog, and Xale quickly held up his hand for a halt. After throughly looking around for any Baelor scout units, he turned his mount and walked back a few steps.

"Right after this bend we will reach the start of the hill. After the bend the bushes all but completly dissapear, and the tree's start being further apart. Crossbowmen, go forward and quickly get into the bushes within range of the enemies line and get ready to fire on my mark. Foot soldiers and Knights, we will charge together after the first volley. Move it!" Xale said, the crossbowmen quickly going forward to the bend and getting into good potions, the men at arms moving forward to directly behind the cavalry. When the Crossbowmen were in postion, Xale started moving forward, the rest of the troops moving in time, and as he started to round the corner, he raised his hand, and clenched it, a signal to fire. The twack of crossbows was silent, though the cries of the soldiers some sixty foot away wasn't.

The picture was not a pretty one however. The brush did indeed clear as they rounded the corner, the tree's more spread out, and ontop of a tall, large hill was a group of around ninty remaining Xanatas soldiers in red, surrounded by what appeared to be two hundread Baelor's clad in brown. Xale knew this was the time for shock and awe, so he wasted no time in raising his sword, and roared out. "Save our cornered brothers, charge and make a hole!" Xale called out, before spurning on his Reiterei, the beast starting slow at first, but after fourty feet picked up quite the charge, and so did the twenty other Knights as they spear headed for the fourty infantry only a moment behind them. Not only did the riders attack the infantry as they came in, but so did their mounts, the tusk's of the beasts able to spear through anything up to heavy armor, and anyone under them was trampled. The infantry struck only a few seconds later, clashing into the enemies lines from the rear and supporting the mounted Knights.

Xale had been the first into the breach, riding at the head, sword slashing down into the head of an unexpecting enemy soldier, splitting the leather skullcap asunder in a violent manner, the man falling dead instantly. Another man was speared by the tusk's of his mount, a brutal, uncanny way to go. The Knight's initial momentum was starting to waver until the infantry hit as well, the Baelorian's caught off guard as one would expect from the attack, the flank nearly failing from the sudden charge alone. It also didn't take long for their Xanatas brothers to react to the attack, Xale raising his sword high to the commander, who returned the action, ordering his wearing ninty men to make one last push against the enemies line. And so they did, charging down the hill to make through use of the opening that had been made. But the Baelorian lines would not be quite so easily broken, attempting to regroup and attack the fleeing force. At this moment, how the battle and plan would progress was anyone's guess, it was the turning point, and which way it would tip was to be seen.

Cyrus trotted along with the main unit as they made for the edge of the forest. What he saw was the Baeloran army surrounding the Xanatas raiding party. The blood could be smelled in the air, iron and dust wet from the rain, it wasn't looking good for Cyrus' allies ahead. But the young knight that led set forth the mounted knights to barrel through the Baeloran line.

Spines could be heard snapping and cries of pain and for mothers began to rise as the Reiterei squashed a number underfoot. Cyrus went to the edge of the charge and leading with his shield, the speed he'd gathered smashed the few Baeloran unlucky enough to have turned to watch the "tall" Falorian bull rush the line with his massive shield. Thrusting his shoulder forwards, Cyrus sent a man flying back into his comrades.

Pausing only to thrust the trident through the chest of a browncoat, Cyrus began to create the first side of the escape path. Men in blue followed behind him and held the wall while the mounted Knights and Xale Xernas led the way to free the trapped Xanatas soldiers. As one wall went up, the other side formed in time for the retreating men to shuffle past their saviors.

"Shield Wall!" Cyrus called out and each foot soldier pressed their shields in front and created a barrier of wood and steel between the rescued Xanatas troops and their Baeloran attackers.

"Hold the line!" Came the booming voice of the taller knight. It would be a few treacherous moments before they too could break and hold off the rear whilst the raiding party made for the encampment. Cyrus hoped they could hold out long enough.

The soldiers on Cyrus Alvori  side held exceptionally well, escpially after his charging display and very good sheild work, the men joining him in the sheild wall, holding back the Baelorian's like a red bulwark.

Xale was in the thick of the fighting on the opposing side from Cyrus Alvori , cutting left and right along side mounted Knights and foot soldiers. Their troops were fresher and much less tired then the enemies, even if they were out numbered dangerously, so they managed to hold inspite of the screams and the heavy smell of blood and death. Despite this, the enemy was starting to press in quickly from each side, and was recovering faster then what you would normally expect. A handful of Xanatas men remained, the enemy close on their heels, and they were coming fast. In addition, the enemy was trying to pull a flanking manuver on them, Xale gritting his teeth as he saw the movement, starting to shout, before suddenly they stopped in their tracks, some of them falling. Some well placed crossbow bolts from them men behind them had saved them from a nasty suprise. And in the next moment, after blocking a spear thrust and returning the favour with a stab, the last of the trapped Xanata's soldiers had escaped.

"They are all through, fall back back!" He called, not that they needed any encouragement. The knights and their Reiterei's started to leave first, not to simply leave before the infantry could, but because the mount's turned slow, and took a while to speed up. It was for this reason that after Xale got turned around and started to spur on his mount, he caught a bodkin arrow in his left arm, the young man tensing up for several moments before the pain hit, and after being unable to hold it in screamed from the wave of pain that hit him. Though he didnt faint, he could barly steer, another knight grasping the reigns and steering while Xale gripped the saddle, the world seeming to go a bit hazy and his left arm getting warm and sticky. Rationally he knew what the feeling was, but this was the first time Xale had ever been hit like this, and it was... Stunning to put it lightly, and like having his arm chopped off to put it strongly.

After they managed to pull back, despite inflicting some damage to the group Xale had lead, the Baelorian's did not attack. Perhaps it was the constant Crossbow fire that was starting to mount up its damage, the weather that was starting to turn fowl, or the state of their troops. But what ever their reason, they abstained from giving chase besides skirmishing shortly with the rear guard with arrows, and then pulling back.

The rallying speech was nothing new, though the situation that led them to that point was.  The charge into the enemy ranks and subsequent fighting to save their besieged troops was quick, but brutal.  As they withdrew he saw his commander and caught an arrow to the left arm area.  He had reached for the reigns to keep his mount steady, but with his arm becoming stained red and his stance on the mount becoming more unsteady by the second, the Knight sheathed his sword.  He then lept from his mount to the back of his commanders mount.

"Sir!  You need to stay awake."  Arturius yelled as he sat behind Xale and took the reigns once more.  His eyes darted to the big man nearby.  "You!  Cyrus!  Get our men back home.  I'm getting the commander to a physician."  He then turned to the remaining knights.  "Knights of Xanatas!  On me!  Move out!"  Spurring the mount to quicken its pace to a gallop.  He yelled to Xale.  "Sir, I got you.  But if you can, tie a rope of sash or something tight around your arm above the arrow.  You need to slow down that bleeding before you pass out."

He'd probably get yelled out later for taking command like this.  But with the amount of blood leaving the young commanders body, he wouldn't last much longer if something didn't happen quickly.

Xale's mind was stunned for a few moments, before he shook his head harshly as they rode down the road hard and fast, gritting his teeth against the pain and speaking to Arturius Casta through gritted teeth. "I am fine, the bleeding is not that bad... More shocking then anything." The adrinaline currently running through his blood kept the pain from seizing his body up, and he slowly pushed himself up with he uninjured right arm. After getting a hold of his wild breathing, he turned his head to look behind them, and saw that the Baelorian's were not giving chase. wtih that, he looked back to Arturius. "Tie a leather strap above the wound. That will make do untill we get back." After saying that, Xale stayed silent, and kept awake. Though after it was done, he thanked him.

The rest of the troops had already filed up and were quickly following the trail back to the fort, and after a moments of riding, a old, grizzled man rode up from behind beside Xale. The crest on his tabard was a well known one. Baron Owen, a well known man for martial and strategic skill. "It is good you made it here when you did boy!" The lightly wounded old man bellowed, with a tone and boisterous nature that most certainly did not fit his aging appearance. The older man noticed the wound almost immediantly after catching up to them, quieting his voice. "First time being hit eh?" He asked, Xale wincing and nodding in reply, the aged commander simply nodding himself, keeping quiet after that.

"Where is... Kendar?" Xale asked Owen, who motioned to the back of the like. "He is alive. He got injured badly in the battle, but he is alive." Xale stiffend for a moment at the news of what happend to his Knight mentor, gritting his teeth at the pain as the muscles in his left arm tightend. "I... I see." He said simply for the moment, trying to simply focus on returning to the fort. Though that got harder and harder, as the adrenaline faded, and the pain became more and more intense.

Arturius didn't like the idea of handing the reins over to the wounded commander, but did as was ordered so he could tie off the wound himself.  Worst case, he could always grab hold of him and the reins once more if Xale began to nod off from blood loss.  The wound was quickly and securely wrapped, but the young commander needed a physician to clean it and soon.

He hadn't finished his task for more than a couple seconds when the baron rode up beside them and began to exchange a few words with Xale.  The conversation was none of his business, so Arturius simply remained quiet, not making any sound or gesture that what was said affected him one way or the other.  But the truth was, he was rather disturbed at how poorly they had performed that day.  Sure they saved what was left of the army.  But many of the commanders were wounded and good deal of the troops themselves lay dead.  He wanted answers as to how this whole mess came about.

Noticing Xale beginning to struggle again, Arturius took the reins back.  "I got it sir.  Hang in there, almost home.  Look, there are the gates now."  The knight offered reassuringly to Xale as they closed in on home and medical support.

The shock of seeing their commander taking a hit wore off as soon as it came. Cyrus had no time for worry when there were enemies to slay. He turned when Arturius Casta ordered him to lead the men back to the Fort. He nodded curtly and yelled for the infantry to push towards the rally point.

"Fall back! Get the men to the Fort!" A clang of steel against his back armor alerted Cyrus to his would be attacker. Slamming the butt of his trident into their foot then upper cutting the prongs through the Baelorans jaw up into his brain.

Cyrus took off with the rest of the men and covered the allied retreat. Commander Xale Xernas had been wounded but seen to it and was right with everyone else.

A sigh of relief left the bearded Falorian when the gates became visible. The danger wasn't over yet as the gates opened to let their comrades in. Cyrus turned around in time to see and arrow come his way, the tower shield on his arm shot up and met the arrow with a solid 'Thud'.

"Archers, to me!" Cyrus called as the parapet echoed with the sound of arrows notching into place. "Fire at will!"

(No enemy soldiers followed them to the fort or gave chase)

Xale proved to be suprisingly steady, keeping a firm hand on the reigns and not messing up his lead even as the wound was temporarily tied off. The wound in actuality wasn't bleeding that badly, but having an arrow sticking through ones arm  is still by no means pleasant. It wasn't untill the fort was in sight that he had trouble holding the reigns, letting Arturius Casta take them at that point.

The soldiers all filed inside forming up at the central square for the moment, while the Baron and commanders immediantly heading to the keep to determine the current situation. As soon as the entire army was inside, the fort was put on lock down, and all able bodied soldiers were sent to the walls in case of an enemy attack. The total number of able bodied men seemed somewhere in the three hundred region.

Xale would be quickly seen to by attendants in the keep, having help both dismounting and in being taken to the court physician. When he got there, the arrow head was pulled off, and the arrow pulled out, the wound cleaned and finally bandaged up tightly, with herbs in the bandage to dull the pain and help healing. Though it annoyed Xale no end, his left arm was also put in a sling, to keep from aggrivating the muscles.

After being tended to, he headed to the main hall, where the rest of the Knights would be, including Cyrus Alvori and Arturius, to go over exactly what happend.

As he walked with the other knights to the main tent, Cyrus helped a fellow wounded warrior to the medical tent. A smear of the mans blood stained his face. The deep blue eyes locked in Alert Mode in case the call came from the walls of a counter attack. For now, the Baron had ordered a Debriefing of the rescue mission.

Commander Xale Xernas had been patched up and the knight Arturius Casta had accompanied the commander the hole way back. Once inside, Cyrus set his weapons down beside an upright and stood where he was, awaiting further orders.

It had been a brief but hectic battle.  Losses were sustained on both sides.  But at least the rescue mission was a success.  The commander may have been injured, but Arturius felt he'd come out of it no worse for wear.  And now he'd have a battle scar to brag about.  Walking into the debriefing tent, he gave a respectful nod to the big soldier he recognized from the battle.  The one with the large shield.  He had fought well this day and Arturius imagined he wouldn't mind going to war with him any time.

But war was definitely the topic at hand.  Camaraderie and boasting about old scars could come later.  First they needed to determine how in the world their army got into the predicament they were in to even need a rescue mission.  Someone messed up big time, and he wanted to know who, and how.  His gaze shifted toward the young commander who had been tended to, wondering if he was going to start off the debrief.

Cyrus Alvori , like the rest of the Knights, would be directed to the main hall, where a gathering was going on about the events that happend.

At the head of the table were two people. Baron Gerath, the lord of the fort they were in, and Owen, a well known and respected Knight Commander. Owen was also the man who had planned the attack on Baelor. When Xale arrived and seated himself, Gerath started speaking on the matters at hand. "Now that we are all here, good work on completing your task of getting those soldiers out." Gerath said, Owen bowing his head deeply in thanks himself. "Before a debreifing on the rescue mission, Sir Owen. You were the leader of the raiding party. You went out there with four hundred men, and come back with less then half that. What the hell happend?" The Baron kept his voice cool and collected, but his tone showed his amazement, and anger, at this situation. Owen coughed before starting to speak.

"The best i can tell, they somehow knew we were coming. The start went well, we dealt with any patrols we ran into swifty, and approached one of the supply forts on the edge of their territory. When we arrived and started our assault, we found ourselves attacked from both sides by bowmen in the woods. As we started to split up to deal with the enemy on each side, they sallied out of the fort and charged. Two hundred of them. We were forced to pull back and weather the attack, but while we were retreating to try and regroup, two groups of one hundred men appeared on both our flanks. That sudden attack is when we lost our men, and we were surrounded." His voice was trembling with rage as soon as he mentioned the bowmen. From there it all went down hill, hard and fast. After explaining the worst of it, he took a moment to calm his voice.

"Not too long later, before we collapsed, the last group that was supposed to join our raiding part arrived." He said, nodding to Xale. "Sir Xale and his Knight Mentor Sir Kendar aided us in escaping. But the Baelorian's didn't let up, the persistant bastards. We were to heavily wounded to mount a full scale retreat back to the fort with the enemy on our heels, so we made use of a nearby defendable hill to wait for reinforcements. Which were brought by Xale and company here." He said, nodding to the Knights who had come to his aid. "That is my account of what happend. Questions?" Owen said, the aged Knight Commander looking around the table for anyone with a mind to speak up.

Cyrus shrugged his shoulders as he let out a sigh. He knew what that meant. Either a Spy had caught wind of the attack or there was a traitor amongst the company. Either needed to be dealt with swiftly. Stepping forwards, he let his voice be heard.

"Knight Alvori, sir. Based on this retelling, it would appear wear either have a mole or a rat in our midst. How do you suppose we flush him out and squash him before he can alert the Baeloran army again?"

Folding his arms as he finished speaking, Cyrus let the question fall over the group. It was a tough thing to admit, holes happened in war, how quickly and effectively they were filled was the test of a true leader.

After listening to the tale of their armies defeat, Arturius couldn't stifle a scowl that overtook his expression.  Even with a spy, a defeat this bad should not have happened if skirmishers were sent out to make sure the flanks were clear.  While Arturius tended to be aggressive, he only did so when he knew he was safe to do so.  He also had an idea though of how to flush out the traitor.  The problem was, it required secrecy, trust, and as few people knowing about the scheme as possible...

"May I ask who all knew of the attack happening?  I mean who all was in the planning of the attack today?"

Arturius offered no explanation for the reason of his question.  He just hoped it would be answered.
