Demonym: Yeldrinian

Major Imports: Technology

Major Exports: Medicinal goods, foodstuffs, raw materials, crystals

Major Locations: Livrester (pop. 15,000) and Treslas (pop. 5,000) are the two largest settlements inhabited by off-worlders, separated about 250 miles from each other. Beyond those, other hamlets and isolated dwellings are scattered few and far between, including a popular hunting ground called the Crib and an Ewok village called Talheth.

Culture: The Yeldrinians are not a single, unified people. Broadly, they are divided into two: Off-worlder and native Yeldrinian. Both sides generally keep to their own settlements and territory, governing themselves independently from each other while mingling to conduct trade and other ventures related to business, diplomacy, or expedition. Whether due to religious beliefs or fear of being usurped by off-worlders, the majority of natives uphold their primitive ways, reluctant to accept modern forms of technology associated with off-worlders, hence the main reason why the two groups and their societies remain separate and distinct from each other.

Within the larger off-worlder settlements, technology is used to help boost productivity and make daily life more convenient. Basics such as electricity and running water, to communications devices and small hovercraft (i.e. speeder bikes and hoversleds) for transportation. While most resident off-worlders prefer the "civilized" and "modern" comforts of living closer to the cities and spaceports, where most of Yeldrin's technology is imported, many off-worlders choose to distance themselves rurally or live completely isolated, even taking up residence with the natives and assimilating to primitive ways.

While some native groups have a more complaisant stance, permitting off-worlders to live among them so long as technology is forsaken, other native groups are more hostile, bent on destroying off-worlders at any opportune chance. It is fear of the unknown, whether or not off-worlders pose a threat to their homeworld and/or way of life, that divides Yeldrin's natives into two opposing sides -- the V'dara, those who would let off-worlders stay, versus the Y'Gora, those who would drive them out.

Technology: Stone-level. A few colonist settlements may be classified as feudal-level or higher, due to the colonized integration of some modern forms of technology and space travel.

History: Located in a remote system seldom traveled through, much less charted and explored, Yeldrin always had its share of "visitors", either by accident or curiosity. Usually shipwreck survivors that crashed onto the moon. Eventually the accumulation of off-worlders, as well as successful landings of those that made contact with the surface, resulted in small settlements sprouting up, gradually expanding the off-worlder population.

Thus far, the Yeldrinians have lived in relative peace and obscurity, undisturbed by any galactic form of government, which also has its drawbacks, providing a haven for spacefaring pirates and hunters to land, drawn to the moon for its bounty of wild game and resources. Along with the discovery of its neighbor moon Endor, several of Endor's native species and wildlife have also immigrated their way over to Yeldrin-- including Ewoks, Endorian scale-hounds, horses, llamas, goats, sheep, chickens, and blurrgs.

Recently, Yeldrin's discovery has attracted the interest of a nearby system, whose leaders are bent on harvesting the moon's resources for their own agenda.

Notable PCs: None yet

Intent: To create a background for an upcoming thread. A new planet for exploration.

NAME: Endorian scale-hound

DESIGNATION: Non-sentient

HOMEWORLD & DISTRIBUTION: Endor moon (homeworld), Yeldrin

COMMUNICATION: Vocalization (barks, yips, growls, yodels, howls, whines), body language -- similar to dogs and other canine species

AVERAGE HEIGHT OF ADULTS: 2 feet, 4 inches (0.71 meters) at the shoulder; twice that length from shoulder to tail-tip. Males are slightly taller and bulkier than females.

SKIN COLOR: Dusty gray

FUR COLOR: Golden base, with cream undersides.

FEATHER COLOR: Shades of vibrant blue. Hues vary from greenish teal blue to grayer steel blue.

EYE COLOR: Gray-blue

BREATHES: Oxygen (Type 1 atmosphere)

STRENGTHS:
  • Sharp pointy teeth and claws, coupled with strong jaws -- good for latching onto prey and puncturing flesh
  • Exceptional hunters, with keen senses of sight, smell and hearing to survey their surroundings. Long legs and lean, narrow bodies aid in their speed and agility for giving chase after prey.

WEAKNESSES:
  • Sensitive ears. Thunder, sirens, explosions, and other loud noises can be detrimental to their hearing and will usually frighten them away.
  • Sensitive to cold
  • Unpredictable in terms of temperament, even if domesticated. Training requires experienced handlers or owners with competence.

DISTINCTIONS: Four-legged canines with large pricked ears. In addition to their short golden fur, a top layer of brightly colored blue feathers covers the backside of their bodies, from nose to tail-tip. These feathers are akin to bird feathers, made of softer down and semiplume feathers that blend into a sleek, scale-like arrangement of contour feathers, resembling a fish or dragon scale appearance.

AVERAGE LIFESPAN: 10-12 years

RACES: N/A

ESTIMATED POPULATION: 350,000 (on the Endor moon). A small number of them have been captured and/or sold and shipped off-world to locations unknown.

DIET: Carnivorous

HABITAT: Savannas

HARDINESS: Comfortable at 68-86°F (20-30°C), as evident in their native habitat, where the climate is mild and gradual year-round. Scale-hounds can puff out their feathers to regulate body temperature, allowing warm or cool air to circulate through. However, these feathers were designed to bring temporary relief in hot temperatures, and not so efficient at maintaining total body warmth in colder temperatures, meaning scale-hounds are not adapted to snow.

REPRODUCTION: Sexual

REPRODUCTION METHOD: Live young. The female has a gestation period of 8-9 weeks (2 months) after which a litter of 3-6 pups is born. A pregnant female will establish her nest in a thicket or underground den or other well-hidden area for her pups to be born in. For the first 10 days, pups are blind and cannot open their eyes. During this time, the mother will stay in the nest with her young, eating food brought to her by the rest of the pack. Pups remain in the nest for the first few weeks of life before venturing outside to play, and shortly begin to learn hunting and territorial behavior from the rest of the pack. Pups nurse on their mother's milk and are weaned at 2 months, then begin eating semi-solid food that is regurgitated for them. At 4 months old, pups can eat entirely solid food. Scale-hounds reach sexual maturity and are fully grown around 2 years of age, but usually don't begin breeding until 3 or 4 years old.

GENERAL BEHAVIOR: Scale-hounds are monogamous. A male and female will pair together and mate for life. If one dies, the other usually takes on a new mate. In the wild, scale-hounds are social creatures that dwell and hunt in family groups. Each pack consists of a male and female "alpha" pair, plus any subordinate offspring from current or previous litters. The alpha pair is the only breeding pair within the pack. Once they reach sexual maturity, most offspring will leave their birth pack in search of a mate to start their own pack.

Scale-hounds are diurnal, hunting actively during the day. Packs are continuously on the move, traveling from place to place depending on where food and water sources are located. During rest periods, both males and females will scent mark the camp's boundaries, and members of the pack will take turns keeping watch throughout the night. The only time when large amounts of territory are secured is when the pregnant alpha female finds a suitable nest for her litter to be born in. During this time, the pack will fiercely defend their territory from intruders or any threats to the pups, maintaining close watch over their borders while sending out hunters to bring back food for the rest of the pack. Once the pups are able to travel and keep up with the rest of the adults, the territory dissolves and the pack resumes their traveling lifestyle once more.

As packs, scale-hounds pose a threat to attacking lone individuals and hunting any livestock they come across. For any wild scale-hound that has left their birth pack and is currently wandering on their own, especially having fallen on hard times in search of prey, a kind and repeated gesture of food has at times been enough to coax out and earn a scale-hound's trust, allowing them to mingle with society. It was in this manner that the first scale-hounds were domesticated and subsequently bred. If born and raised in captivity, most scale-hounds are affectionate and friendly towards people, but there is no guarantee that a domesticated scale-hound won't revert back to its wild instincts, even after several generations of captive breeding. In cases that a domesticated scale-hound turns hostile, they are usually put down, but a few may end up being sold off-world, for a price.

With most successful breedings, scale-hounds are highly loyal and devoted to their owners. Sterilization is recommended, which gets rid of a scale-hound's sexual drive to seek out a mate, instead bonding closer with their handlers. As pups, they form deep attachments with their littermates, which enhances their coordination and performance, making it more commonplace for an entire litter to be used as a team for hunting and guarding purposes. If imprinted from puppyhood, scale-hounds can even serve as effective livestock guardian dogs, fighting against their own wild counterparts to protect livestock from being eaten.

HISTORY: While most scale-hounds live undisturbed in the wild on Endor, roughly 30% have been domesticated and bred in captivity, mainly for hunting and guarding purposes. A few scale-hounds have been transported and sold off-world to other locations, where they fetch a decent price for their reputation, or as specimens of scientific study.

INTENT: To create a dog that is not quite dog, as an animal companion for Willow Ryden. To add to Endor's list of wildlife and give characters another animal species to interact with.

NAME: Willow Ryden

LOYALTIES: Family and friends. Unaffiliated (yet) with any major faction.

ROLE: Friend of Hwin Breeze

AGE: 14 years (as of 9 ABA; born 5 BBA)

SPECIES: Human

FORCE-SENSITIVITY: Yes (ever so slightly, enough to qualify as a "sixth sense" sort of thing, but even that’s a bit shaky and unreliable)

APPEARANCE: (As pictured)
     Height: 5'4" (1.63 m)
     Weight: 105 lbs (47.6 kg)
Skin: Light tan with a dusting of freckles across her nose
     Hair: Dark brown
     Eyes: Sage green

PERSONALITY: ISFP-T / Adventurer-Turbulent

WEAPON OF CHOICE: Fists, wits, vocal chords, clumsiness, a prayer or two, and a pinch of luck

WEALTH: None personally. Dependent upon family and other kind souls to financially support and look after her.

COMBAT FUNCTION: Moral support, is likely the safest place for her to be — away from all the action and fighting — since any “help” from her is usually viewed as a hinderance and annoyance. No combat training whatsoever. Either she'll freeze up like a deer in headlights or fight back tooth and nail like a wildcat. Good at sneaking around and blowing things up accidentally. Might have the potential to become a decent pilot, with the right training.

SKILLS: Horseback riding. Piloting (unknown to her at the moment). Fluent in Ewokese and Galactic Basic. Raised in a rural setting, she has a fair amount of experience in farming, livestock, carpentry, fishing, and some knowledge of herbal medicine — local, primitive techniques that may prove useful elsewhere, outside of her homeworld.

FORCE POWERS:

Padawan

NOTABLE POSSESSIONS:

OTHER NOTES (BIOGRAPHY): Born and raised on Yeldrin. At age fourteen, she was captured by Arp the Trandoshan, which is where her story begins…

INTENT: Will feature as a deuteragonist in one (or a few) of Hwin Breeze's backstory threads.
